The Unpredictable Gift of Gratitude

Gratitude lists are everywhere this time of year, but what if the most meaningful things to be grateful for are the ones that didn’t go as planned?

Gratitude Beyond the Good

As we enter the season of gratitude, we’re often encouraged to pause and count our blessings. And while reflecting on the good things is undoubtedly valuable, there's a layer to gratitude that goes beyond simply being thankful for what’s good in our lives. What if, instead of just naming the things we’re grateful for, we explored the concept of gratitude for what we never planned, the moments that turned out unexpectedly well—or even, at first, unpleasant?

When Life Throws You a Curve Ball

Life has a way of giving us experiences that feel uncomfortable, challenging, or even like missteps. And yet, these “unplanned gifts” are often the ones that lead us to growth, self-awareness, and resilience. When I left my dream job -- the place I could never imagine leaving -- I didn't know what was next. Ten years later, I realize the loss has been one of my greatest gifts because it pushed me into doing what I'm designed to do.

This year, consider adding an extra layer to your gratitude practice by reflecting on the moments that threw you off course but ultimately brought you something valuable. Maybe it’s a job loss that eventually led to a better opportunity, or a difficult conversation that deepened a relationship.

Find the Hidden Gifts

Gratitude isn’t just for the things that feel good or look perfect in our lives. When we stretch ourselves to embrace the unexpected—and even the uncomfortable—with gratitude, we discover how life’s twists and turns shape us in ways we couldn’t imagine. This season, let’s be thankful for the whole journey—the smooth roads, the detours, and the surprising views along the way. What hidden gifts are you grateful for this year?

What’s an unplanned moment in your life that turned out to be a blessing in disguise? I’d love to hear your story.

Happy Thanksgiving—may it be filled with both expected joys and surprising gifts!
